The Rev. Owen Skinner
I truly love the people of Tucker First UMC and I am honored to lead the Table 153 Contemporary Worship as my primary ministry. I also assist the Senior Adult Ministry and Missions Ministry. It’s a real blessing to be in a church God is using for the transformation of the world and I look forward to how we can all share in God’s work together!
I was born and raised outside of New Orleans in Slidell, Louisiana. My memories of church life began at Aldersgate UMC where my parents were charter members and the church was my playground. In junior high, we moved to Oklahoma City and were faithful members of Putnam City UMC. During an evangelistic camp called Dayspring, I heard my call to pastoral ministry and accepted it later in the midst of a youth revival in Dallas, TX. I began in youth ministry, in various church and camp ministry settings, while attending Oklahoma City University. While working toward my MDiv at Candler School of Theology, I was employed at the Atlanta Union Mission where I met my beautiful and compassionate wife, Kelly. We were married during the time I served my first appointment as the youth minister at Boston Avenue UMC in Tulsa, OK. As we began to think about having children, we moved back to Georgia to be close to Kelly’s family and served at Snellville UMC in youth ministry, pastoral care, missions and senior adult ministry. I have also served as the senior pastor of Mount Vernon UMC in Rocky Face. However, my love for being on a pastoral team, preaching and congregational care have brought me to Tucker First UMC!
In my spare time, I enjoy being with Kelly and my family. (You can learn more about our family at http://www.icgodnu2.blogspot.com/.) Whenever we have the opportunity, we love swimming, tubing and knee boarding on the lake. And, my favorite way to spend quiet/reflection time is cycling. Although, the occasional cycling race with others is just as exhilarating! My favorite foods are sushi and hot tamale candies (but not at the same time!). And last but not least, I love getting to know people. All of us have amazing stories where God is present in obvious or subtle ways. It is my joy and privilege to help us see them more clearly through the ministry at Tucker First UMC!
